On the way to an electronic price list

For the marketing of products companies normally use printed price lists. The costs for the production of these lists rise in consequence of a growing diversity of nowadays products. In the future it is expected that the complexity of products increases. Therefore the questions of how to keep price lists complete, up to date and easy to understand are more and more becoming urgent. We have to face the mentioned challenges and have to find an appropriate solution although the printed version won’t disappear short-dated.

Due to the high availability of digital product data the development of an electronic price list is the only acceptable alternative in medium and long-term. The possibilities of  modern data processing offer numerous advantages. For example, the representation of different variants of a product is much easier to realize than on paper. In addition, digital data can be updated quickly; the associated costs are minimal in contrast to the paper version. Another important advantage is that an electronic price list can be implemented for different devices like personal computers, smart phones (e.g. iPhone, Android) or tablet computers like the iPad.

A well developed concept of the electronic price list and its appropriate implementation can provoke a higher level of satisfaction for both manufacturers and customers.

A first step in this direction was made by EasternGraphics. In close cooperation with Sedus the software company has developed a prototype for the graphical configuration of products. The customer chooses a certain product from the offered series and adjusts its properties. The system internally ensures that only real product variants can be configured. At any time, the result of the configuration can be displayed as an image.

The current prototype can be tested in the web. It marks a first milestone in the development of electronic price lists.

The following videos show the usage of the prototype on a personal computer and an iPad.
